I'm not being a freaky Dr. Frankenstein or anything! I am just describing my experience with the writing process, as I was thinking about it today.
For instance your first sit down, where you're writing your outline/synopsis, or even your first rough draft of your novel...those are your bones. They piece together all the important parts, all the basic structure, and when your done, you can read through it again and make notes about what you missed, what plot lines you let drop or even plants you never followed through with...those are the muscles. They wrap around the bones, giving them strength and substance to get ready for the...SKIN! The skin comes after you send your bones and muscles to your editor and they find all the little flaws that will make your skin look lumpy and bulgy. So you fix those, and you are ready to stretch that skin over and hold the story...or person together.
But what about the hair? Eye lashes? Eyes? COPY EDITS! Yes, all these little last minute add ins and perfections are your copy edits! The punctuation, the spelling mistakes, are fixed! And now you have this beautiful story (ehem) person to strut around the world and entertain people...and you can run out to the highest peak and scream, "It's alive!"
