One of the hardest things about being obsessed with T.V. shows is when they deviate from the "Rules of Romance". For example, Dawson's Creek should have always been Joey and Dawson. (At least, as a teenager, that is what I believed. As an adult, I tend to love the Pacey and Joey relationship.) My point is, in the first episode of any romantic T.V. show worth it's salt, it subtly introduces the audience to who the heroine belongs with. Examples include; Dawson's Creek, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Grey's Anatomy, etc.
HOWEVER, the longer a T.V. show remains on the air, the more time they have to throw in plot twists and WTFs (IE all the shows I just mentioned.)
But then there are those perfect gems who follow the rules, do what I want, and are rewarded with my undying love and loyalty.
Like The Mindy Project. Mindy is a hopeless romantic whose personality can sometimes land her in awkward situations. From the beginning, Danny and Mindy were end game. Even when they didn't like each other, they were meant for each other. And I love the way Mindy the Writer creates hilariously awkward, yet squeal worthy romantic moments that keep me coming back for more. Like Danny and Mindy's first kiss that leads to a hilarious make out session in the airplane bathroom, or when Danny finally makes it to the top of the Empire State Building to profess his love and finds Mindy laying on the ground out of breath and cursing him for making her come there. I'm smiling just thinking about it. And in the last episode, when instead of getting on a plane and heading to Texas for Peter's wedding, Danny flies to India to ask Mindy's parents for her hand. Sigh. Squeal. Repeat.
In conclusion, while some shows screw up their love stories (I'm looking at YOU New Girl) The Mindy Project continues to give me hope that romance isn't dead in prime time.
And P.S. If Mindy ever wrote a romance novel, I would be the first one in line!
What do you think? What T.V. shows are getting it (or have gotten it) right? Who hit and missed?
